The Ways and Means Committee and a Democratic minority dispute the bill's design to cut taxes by millions. Speakers argue the plan shifts burdens, with analysis showing individuals earning 25 000 to 66 000 paying similar taxes, while higher earners face larger cuts up to 50 65 percent, and corporate rates moving toward a graduated relief.

The Montana State Bar association holds its annual meeting at Hunter’s Hot Springs with sessions Friday led by A. N. Whitlock and FE Day. Judge William H. Hunt to speak on Reminiscences, followed by dinner. Saturday features talks on Bar Examinations and Prohibition, with closing address by J. Bruce Kremer and officer elections.
In a friendly event on Street, the Hulman Fire Team dined with Williams crew following a competitive hydrant relay. Teams led by captains Ray Willman and H E Williams showcased rapid hydrant action on Upper McLeod and Patterson blocks, with penalties and timing noted for several runners.
In Butte on a Sunday School picnic Albert Pierce fought with and killed a four foot eagle that attacked his baby held in his arms. After beating the bird with a rock and then with a heavy stick, the father dropped the child and killed the eagle in a ten minute struggle. The baby was uninjured. Pierce sustained facial scratches. The bird was taken home as a trophy.
Democratic members of the house at a caucus pledged to vote against the Republican tax revision bill and adopted a resolution calling the measure subversive to taxation principles. The caucus, in its fourth session since yesterday, also instructed Ways and Means Democrats to offer a recommit motion before the final vote set for 3 p.m. Saturday.
Washington reports O H P Shelley of Montana appointed federal prohibition director for the state to replace L K Devlin with headquarters in Helena. Salary set at 4000 yearly plus several higher paid posts and twenty staffers totaling about 40950 in salaries. civil service for narcotics staff, others under patronage.
Cleveland officials say the big four railroad brotherhoods and the Switchmen's Union will issue a referendum ballot on wage reductions ordered by the United States railway labor board. The vote, set for Saturday at 3 p m, aims to gauge membership stance before September 1. James Murdock, acting head of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen, noted ballots must be mailed to members as soon as possible.
Lewistown reports a rancher named Peter Rung was struck by lightning while plowing in his field during an electrical storm near Utica, 1 mile northwest of the city. This marks the second lightning death in two weeks. Mrs. Harry Lay of the Rager News-Democrat staff died when struck by a bolt earlier this month.
Washington August 17 movement of hay to and from Omaha Kansas City and other markets has been cut by more than half due to rising freight costs. D B Tilson a Kansas City hay exchange traffic expert noted California Imperial valley hay could reach New York by water via Panama Canal for 12 75 a ton versus rail costs to New York of 3500. James T Suttie Omaha exchange transportation department described Nebraska and surrounding states conditions and said quantities of hay will not be cut this year.
Perry Moore, one of eastern Montana's oldest pioneers, died Tuesday night in a Lewistown hospital after an operation. He was well known in the region and left a large family behind.
Senate debate on open or closed sessions at the disarmament conferences yielded little consensus. Senator Lodge indicated a general disarmament aim, while others warned against excessive cuts to the military and navy. President Harding listened to women leaders urging a woman on the U S delegation.
Roy Connolly was bound over to the high court after a yester day afternoon hearing before Justice T W Kietchley on a charge of taking a cow from E C Moore of Wheatland county about two years ago. State witnesses included E C Moore and neighbors. Connolly did not testify and was held to appear at the next term under 1000 bail posted by Lec 32 Cremer and Guy F Skillman.
In San Francisco on August 17 federal inspectors began hearing testimony from four executive officers of the steamer Alaska wrecked off Blunt's reef near Eureka the previous day. Union and non union crew members contrasted reactions and officers were reportedly scarce on deck after impact. Seaman Frank Freitag of Alameda said more lives could have been saved and noted only Captain Hobey Boatswain Fred Helmer and Fourth Officer M J Albion were seen after the collision. Freitag claimed the boatswain gave orders on life boat lowering and he had to urge a sailor to act for passengers.
Frank Whitlock, an ex convict charged with forgery who escaped Park county jail on August 7 after beating Jailer O Hern, was arrested in Laurel by NP Watchman Jimmie Lynch and jailed in Billings. Accomplices Tom Allen and Harry Mathews remain at large. Park county offered rewards of 100 and 50, Whitlock 250.
Frank P. Fox and George B. McCamey as McCamey Fox sue JL Douthett in district court seeking a decree declaring them owners of an oil and gas lease on the Eliza Harper property in Sweet Grass County. They claim Douthett failed to transfer the lease and demands assignment and delivery of the lease.
