Rail disaster near Elko rocks City of San Francisco
Federal authorities took charge of the investigation into the derailment of the City of San Francisco train near Elko Nevada. Twenty three people were killed and 109 injured as officials said rails were moved by unknown persons. The wreck involved a 149 passenger train and a 1 million dollar streamliner suffering a catastrophic collapse. A suspect with ears cut off was sought, and an inquest blamed a misplaced rail.

Forgotten Prisoner Is Finally Released
New York Aug 10 A prisoner forgotten by a troubled judge sought release after ten months in Sing Sing. Thomas Gorgan, 29, was convicted of a holdup last October 18, but two inmates testified another man committed the robbery. Judge Philip A Brennan ordered a habeas corpus hearing and could free Gorgan, who may return to the home where witnesses testified he stayed the night of the crime.

Helena August 15. R H Fletcher plans engineer for the state highway commission says tourists enter Montana at about 4.225 daily. Daily average 1,319 cars from other states and foreign countries at state entry stations with 3.2 persons per car. Canada traffic adds about 2,500 cars weekly paged by federal customs. Last week 9,230 cars entered, year total 70,375, up 11.9 percent from a year ago.

Hardin Man Ends Life by Hanging
The body of a man tentatively identified as Charles Devaere of Hardin was found hanging from a tree two and one half miles northeast of Hardin. Sheriff Ulrich said the death appeared self inflicted and the man had been dead about two weeks. A liquor license found in the pocket aided the tentative identification. The finder was a local farm youth whose name was not learned.
