Fires to Date On Gallatin Forest

Dewey Olsen Dies After Long Illness in Tacoma
O. Dewey Olsen, former Big Timber resident, died Monday in a Tacoma hospital after a six year battle with a stroke and speech loss. Born August 7, 1898 in LeRoy Minnesota he moved through North Dakota Montana and finally settled in Livingston before relocating to Tacoma in 1949. He operated a wholesale candy agency and founded Quick-Freeze Lockers in Livingston and is survived by his wife Gertrude Lamb a son Jim and a grandson. A World War I veteran he belonged to Park County American Legion and Livingston Elks. Funeral services planned in Tacoma this afternoon.

The Northern Pacific closed its 66 year old Homestake tunnel near Butte Montana. A new 3440 foot line 300 feet south, completed August 8, cost about 460000. Grading by LaLonde Co. and NP crews relocated tracks and lines. 350000 cubic yards of rock were moved. Regular service began May 26 1890 with direct eastward trains.

Milton Wordal has joined the U S Naval Reserve as an officer candidate after taking the oath from Commander J A Hein at the Butte recruiting station. The Montana Fish and Game Commission set the opening day for upland game birds on September 16. A bag and possession limit of three birds in aggregate applies to ruffed blue and Franklin's grouse plus sharp-tailed and sage grouse. Seasons vary by county with hunting hours 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and rifles allowed for blue, ruffed, and Franklin's grouse but not prairie grouse.
