Washington August 14 Provost Marshal General Crowder ordered Saturday August 21 registration of all youths who turned 21 since the June 5 draft. About 150000 men expected to register most likely join Class 1 and be drafted within a month. Alaska Hawaii and Porto Rico exempted temporarily, later date to be fixed. Only active service members are exempt. September 5 not fixed as registration date for older men due to state primaries.
Judge Kurles and court actions in Glendive include reopening the murder case against J B Burley for the July 3 killing of Henry Van Goor with bail set at 1000 and a September 11 pleading date. At the latest State Livestock commissioners meeting plans were approved for a state bacteriological laboratory to be built by the state sanitary board. The facility will house the livestock commission and health department and support research on contagious abortion in cattle loco weed and other local livestock diseases. Four Chicago brand inspectors will operate this year with Sam Scott in charge. John Kiehl from Harlowton joins the Chicago yard staff and W H Donald of Melville invites stockmen to share complaints or buying and selling lists. Frank Robinson, tied to Mrs Lay, tours Reed Point as he recovers from surgery and reports Montana and Washington crews building spruce timber for planes.
Capt Frank Edwards spoke at the Auditorium Sunday evening and spent the day at Hunters Hot Springs. He was met by A V McIvor cashier of the Scandinavian American bank and Under Sheriff Jay Loving who brought him to town by auto. A heavy storm then made Voges ranch roads nearly impassable. The first 12 miles took one hour and the last six the same, beating the clock to reach just before his talk.
Glenn Parker led a conference of Park Gallatin and Sweet Grass counties to establish a detention hospital for quarantining and treating social diseases during the war period. A permanent committee was named to select a Livingston site and set August 16 for the next meeting.
Joseph Pope of Billings falls short of required signatures for the eastern district Republican congressional nomination. He filed 813 valid signatures of 869 needed, with state officials ruling signatures from unsigned petitions invalid but allowing completed petitions missing notary seals. Other candidates named include RK Linebarger Havre Carl Riddick Lewistown and R J Moore Glasgow.
