County commissioners cut the 1910 levy by 24 mills to 14 mills total, with county purposes 8.5 mills and 5.4 mills for high school funds. The reduction follows a rise in property values and funds now cover existing needs. The county emphasizes low taxes as a key attractant for homeseekers and new residents.
Executive committee fixed September 15 for the state Republican convention to convene in Missoula. Delegates are allotted by a 65 vote per delegate basis plus three at large per county, totaling 591 delegates, with the apportionment listing totals for each county across the state.
The Big Timber wool season of 1910 ends with 1,500,000 pounds shipped the largest in years. Prices averaged 16 to 20 cents a pound with many clips sold at 18 cents. Major sales include Dave Stewart 11,885 pounds and Charles Bryan 90,000 pounds, all to J. Koshland & Co.
The committee leading the bid to save the suspended First National Bank of Billings issues its last call with Aug 15 as the grace deadline. Depositors must sign waivers totaling 400000 to cover collateral held by the treasury department for loans. About 370000 had been signed before a recent hitch stalled progress.
The region reports a decline in western state fires after weeks of smoke. Hundreds of firefighters, paid three dollars a day plus expenses, kept fires under control while rain was hoped to aid suppression. The army was placed on standby to assist if needed. Incendiary arson is suspected with rewards posted for suspects as damage runs into millions.
Forestry bureau of the Montana department of agriculture begins a study of conifer diseases led by pathologist George D. Hedgecock. He will spend about a month in the state to map disease extent and nature, with results to appear in an upcoming department bulletin.
District court held a brief session before Judge Henry considering exparte and probate matters. W A Harrison et al. vs Paul L Van Cleve et al. saw a new decree adjusting water rights on Sweet Grass creek dated June 23 1888. Forsythe vs Hannah the bill of exceptions was approved and rehearing held. State vs Blaser was dismissed due to witness unavailability.
Sheriff Fallang of Big Timber Montana tracked Bill Stuart wanted for murder in Melville and Montana. A Mansfield deputy dispatched a single shotgun shot but Stuart fled, dodging pursuit through N H Moore’s pasture, the meat market area, and a cornfield before vanishing into timber west of town.
W P Kenney of the Great Northern asserts the railroad will continue recruiting in Montana and not lay off workers. He downplays crop failures, says Montana fared better than neighbors, and notes dry farming challenges while stressing authentic crop-condition reports amid a northwest drought.
Sweet Grass County attracts land seekers from the east with trips through Big Timber. A Cincinnati group led by G A Kraemer J P Bouscaren and F J Sobje visited the Glass Lindsay tract inspected farms and grain samples noting five foot wheat and oats. They returned east content with conditions observed.
