Atomic blast sinks Arkansas and ships at Bikini test
The July 25 underwater atomic blast sank the 29,000 ton battleship Arkansas and two smaller craft, damaged the carrier Saratoga, and endangered others as Admiral Blandy reported the 87 ships affected. A vast water plume rose to 9,000 feet and the fleet faced heavy damage with several vessels shown sinking or listing.

Fala the White House dog was denied access to the Hotel Eastland in Portland Maine after Mrs Franklin D Roosevelt canceled reservations. An Eastland clerk told her dogs could not be taken above the lobby and she left. The Royal River cabins owner later claimed the dog stayed there with the President’s mistress.

Forest Fires Blaze in Kalispell Area Upper Swan Range Fire
Fire crews fought a blaze in the Hemlock Creek area of the Flathead National Forest in western Montana. About 75 men battled the flames which had consumed over 90 acres, with 27 more expected to arrive. Small fires nearby, under two acres, were controlled by smoke jumpers.

Three Fires At Head Of Sweet Grass
Five forest fires in the vicinity were reported yesterday by rangers. A small lightning fire at Mission creek thirteen miles beyond Mount Livingston was controlled by 6 p m. Fires from a train near Yankee Jim canyon in the Gardiner district were put out by 6 p m. An observer flew over Sweet Grass canyon and found three fires two at the head of Sweet Grass canyon and one at the head of Big Timber canyon. Crews were sent out early to combat the blazes.

Absarokee Mail Carrier John Seely Dies at 74
Funeral services were held for John Knox Seely 74 at the Congregational church in Absarokee. He died at his home Wednesday and is buried in Rosebud cemetery. A native of Glenville Minnesota, he moved to Montana in the eighties and served 20 years as a mail carrier between Absarokee and Beehive. He married Estory Rhyneer in 1934.

Man Struck by Lightning Receives Hospital Care
Kenneth Algie aged 32 was struck by lightning at Como ten miles south of Hamilton as he entered his car. First aid and artificial respiration were given by his sister Mrs Herbert Wilkerson before an ambulance transported him to hospital where officials said he would recover.
