The Assembly of God Church welcomes two new pastors now living in Big Timber. See page 12 for the feature. A question answer session related to the Chamber of Commerce is planned for next week with a U S Chamber representative visiting The Pioneer publishers. See page 10 for details.
In a special meeting Mayor McLean Clark led the council to unanimously table Ordinance 385 for further study and form a committee with the mayor sheriff and council. The discussion covered enforcement costs ownership of dogs and the plan to target owners rather than animals.
Big Timber imposes alternate day watering for lawns and gardens. Even houses may water on even calendar days and odd houses on odd days, with restrictions applying seven days a week indefinitely. Water use last weekend drained the reservoir by 4 p.m. and night watering is banned between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. A $50 fine may result for hose and fountain violations when the fire siren sounds.
The Police Commission unanimously urged the City Council to modify the leash law to avoid breaching the interagency Agreement. Sheriff Ken Thompson warned the department would not enforce the leash statute, citing manpower and cost issues, and urged renegotiation or repeal. Local officials discussed adding a city animal control officer and rewriting the animal ordinance while delaying the new law.
SGHS joins Billings West Choirs for a Thursday 8 p.m. concert in the High School gym. The festival at West High School in Billings included nineteen area schools with over 2000 students. Performances and ratings from the District 9 Music Festival highlighted solos, ensembles, and the host school's concert choir.
The Big Timber Grade School Board toured the old Rapstad property with County Attorney Ken Olson to resolve an unre surveyed one acre that may be short. Olson proposed trading land with neighbor owners to clearly define lines. Trustees Sandsness Tulley and Johnson will meet with Olson and Dick Josephson next week.
James Mock was found guilty of theft in District Court on April 13 and received a four year suspended sentence last week from District Judge Jack Shanstrom. The suspension requires 90 days in county jail under a work program and restitution for saddles and part of his attorney fees. The case stems from saddles and tack items stolen from the L. C. Hurley ranch near Fairview in August 1974.
The Sith annual High School Week in Bozeman will send Lois Stenberg Arlene Stidharn Floyd Thompson Penny Fan and Tim Kalberg from SGHS to represent their school. The event hosted by Montana State University includes testing, scholarships, campus activities, speakers, banquets, tours and a show with a dance. Last year 891 delegates from 165 of Montana’s 185 high schools competed for over 19 000 in scholarships. this year’s total is expected to exceed 21 000. Delegates depart Thursday morning and return Saturday morning, staying on the MSU campus.
Sephson told The Pioneer last week he did not prepare the new dog leash law passed on April 18. He said in reference to the Law Enforcement Agreement with the county that the measure could jeopardize the agreement, which states police services are provided only if not a danger to public health.
The County Tax Appeal Board will meet May 16 to June 27, 1977 to hear taxpayer appeals. Filing forms are at the County Assessor or Court House. last date to file is June 6, 1977. Applicants receive at least three days notice before appearing before the board.
County Commission Chairman Bjarne Bjorndal announced this week that the morning session approved and signed a contract with HSRI for the services of Dr. Susana Steinberg. Dr. Steinberg is expected to arrive in Big Timber soon.
