Orvin B Flare 42 of Big Timber filed yesterday as a Republican candidate for the United States Senate. He cites Montana experience and vows a vigorous campaign. The Flares long civic record includes Jaycees and Legion posts, with Flare a former congressman and state representative. He pledges to bolster research for agricultural products, labor rights, highways, new industries, private enterprise, Indian rights, and a strong public school system.

Funeral services for William H. Sloan 84 will be held this afternoon at the Lowry Chapel. He died Monday night at the Big Timber Rest Home after living there since last October. Born October 20 1875 in Somerset Kentucky he came to Montana in 1902 and worked as a carpenter before homesteading on the Boulder area ranch and later moving to Big Timber. Survivors include two sons Charles of McLeod and Harold of Livingston seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

About 325 residents filled the SGHS gym for the Jim Bond Show sponsored by the Big Timber Jaycees. Bond failed to appear, funds were refunded, and April 18 was given as the next scheduled date. The Jaycees apologized and may reschedule later in spring.

Big Timber Hosts District Future Farmers Meet
The Big Timber FFA chapter hosts the Southwestern District meeting Friday and Saturday with 120 members from Belgrade Manhattan Deer Lodge Dillon Sheridan Three Forks Clyde Park Livingston and Whitehall. Contests include livestock and soils judging grain identification farm mechanics parliamentary procedure plus written tests. Recreational events feature rifle marksman ship horseshoes basketball and tractor driving with a Saturday 4 30 banquet at the Lutheran parish hall and a Green Hand award.

Claude Gray Files for Montana State Senate Bid
Claude C. Gray, veteran politician and former Sweet Grass County representative, files as a Democratic candidate for the Montana state senate. He served in 1935 and 1957, chaired the daily journal committee, and was sergeant at arms in 1989. Gray helped found the Farmers Service Association and held leadership roles in farm groups, dairy and livestock committees, and state employment advisory work. He and Mrs Gray moved to Sweet Grass County in 1933 after purchasing a ranch four miles south of Big Timber.

Herman Utermohle longtime Sweet Grass county resident died Sunday at 82 in Community hospital after living on a ranch near the area since 1888. He helped organize the 1905 fairgrounds and served as Sweet Grass county treasurer 1904 1908. Survivors include his widow two daughters and five grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday at St Mark s Episcopal church.
