Phyllis Watters notes how S G H S seniors in Big Timber raised funds for a turkey dinner after lacking money for a traditional trip. Despite opposition, the class turned the plan into a celebrated effort reflecting optimism about America's youth and future.
Fitzgerald R. Fritz Hickman 94 longtime Big Timber and Sweet Grass County resident died last week in a Mesa Arizona nursing home. He was born January 1 1871 in Greysville Georgia and came to Montana in 1895. He owned the Terland ranch on Bridger Creek and later the Burton Smith ranch near Grey Cliff. He served as Sweet Grass County clerk treasurer and sheriff and ran a hardware store in Big Timber. He was a Mason World War I veteran and survived by his wife Inga and four sisters.
Oscar Gavne 72 died at home after a lengthy illness. Funeral held at Lowry Chapel with Rev. Ocee Johnson officiating. Interment Mountain View. Gavne born March 9 1893 Mandan ND. He worked as a carpenter for the Northern Pacific then owned Economy store in Big Timber with brother. Survivors include nephews Gordon and Ben Gavne and niece Mrs John H Yost.
The Sweet Grass County 4H Council will hold a spring meeting at 7 30 p m on Tuesday April 20 at the courthouse. Mrs William Snapp president of the south central district will attend. Topics include dates for the 1965 4H fair quotas for the 4 H Congress and Winter Fair recreation workshop and leadership training.
The American Legion Auxiliary meeting discussed child welfare in the county with guest speaker Mrs. Raymond Hoem. They plan to buy clothes for a graduating needy child and donate to the National Child Welfare Foundation. Attendees also shared travel reports and district news, electing officers and acknowledging contributions.
Mrs. Astrid Lentz 54 native of Big Timber was found dead Sunday in a Hardin used car lot. Born March 23, 1911 to Ma and Mrs. Christ Wirak, she taught in Rosebud County, married Alfred H. Lentz May 17, 1939 in Forsyth. Survives include her mother Mrs. Sara Wirak of Billings. Authorities report no evidence of foul play.
From Ronan Mn and Mrs Joe Hefty came in law and sister Mr and Mrs Al Mehus. The fragment lists family members and guests at a local gathering in Ronan Minnesota with names connected to an event or social occasion.
The Melville story centers on Hubbard O. Hickox who founded the town with a single load of goods moved by a cayuse. It rose beside Sweet Grass creek near Cayuse Butte, facing rugged terrain and the Crazies mountains. Early settlers were scattered, and Hickox kept Big Timber competitive as ranchers relied on long Montana trails for supplies.
Irene Geneva Pollman 55 died Tuesday in a Billings hospital after six weeks of cancer treatment. Services Friday at 10:30 a.m. in Lowry Chapel with Rev. Lowell Siebrass officiating. Burial at Mountain View. Survivors include son Donald Pollman of Libby and daughter Constance Barnard of Kaycee.
Dr. Marjorie Brooks from Montana State College and Dean K Hoffman from the cooperative extension service will speak on Womens Responsibility in Community Planning at the Trio Home Demonstration club meeting on Wednesday April 21 at 2 00 p m at the Dugout. The event is open to all county women and refreshments will be served after adjournment with Mrs Edna Peterson in charge of arrangements.
C. V. Mosier spent a couple of weeks in Des Moines visiting his brother and relatives. He noted the trip’s only dry days occurred during the two days before his departure as floods persisted in the area. He traveled by train on the return, preferring the smoother ride to the bus.
Melville rancher Oscar Esp died unexpectedly at Community hospital after admission for flu. Death attributed to a heart attack. Funeral services set for Monday April 19 at 2 p m at Big Timber Lutheran church.
The Lions club plans an Easter egg hunt Sunday at 2 for youngsters with events on the city park baseball diamond and athletic field. Trails include first and second graders at the west end led by Virgil Gust, and older groups at the city camp ground with prizes for silver and gold eggs.
Mr and Mrs Vic Gee were honored at an open house at the Emery Evangelical parsonage. The event featured green decor and a large centerpiece in green and white. Details note Rev H S Tool and Mrs Kenneth Hossfeld in attendance.
The Jayceens held an officer election with Mrs Maurice Flanagan as president and others named for vice president secretary treasurer and directors. They completed a year of projects including rodeo boat float scrap book and Christmas events and supported Girl Scouts eye and ear testing milk program and Easter Seal drive.
Sweet Grass county sheepmen will receive incentive payments for shorn wool and unshorn lambs today. The combined total is 44 797.02 dollars with 35 627.08 for 163 shorn wool applicants and 9 169.94 for 167 lamb applicants.
SGHS Thespians present Judgement Morning by Robert Brouse and This Way to Heaven by Douglas Parkhirst on Tuesday evening April 20 in the high school gym. Cast includes Margery Nickel, Trish Beley, Roger Thomas, Barbara Beck, Nancy Hart and others. State festival entry Bozeman date noted. Elvin James Mihalovich 49 a summer resident of the Boulder area died of a heart attack Monday at his Roundup Montana home He was born March 19 1916 in Klein to Mr and Mrs Vince Mihalovich He married Vivian Charlton Aug 10 1940 in Lewistown He worked at Staunton Chevrolet in Roundup for 10 years Survivors include his parents his widow and two sons Richard and Robert of Roundup The service was Thursday at 2 pm at Wier Funeral Home Roundup with burial at Mountain View Cemetery Billings
Eileen Marie Wagner daughter of Mr and Mrs Harry Wagner of Bozeman announces her engagement to Ronald D Briggs son of Mr and Mrs Edmund H Briggs of Grangeville Idaho The bride to be is a St Ignatius high school graduate and Montana State College animal and range science secretary The prospective groom a Grangeville high school and Boise Junior College graduate worked on the Nez Pence national forest two years and is a Gallatin national forest employee He is a civil engineering major with June 26 wedding planned
Martin Walter Ripley a former rancher on Lower Sweet Grass died in Tucson Arizona Monday from a heart attack. The body will be brought to Big Timber for funeral Saturday at 2 PM from Lowry Chapel with Rev. Ocee Johnson officiating. Burial is in Mountain View. Ripley born August 7 1880 in Sherwood Oregon moved to Montana in 1915 and lived in Livingston 14 years. He married Gladys Edwards in Missoula January 23 1918 and was World War I veteran. Survivors include his widow five daughters three sons a sister two brothers twenty three grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Harlowton welcomes Doctor Johnson who is recuperating after fore hospitalization. During his absence the hospital has been closed to admissions and is not accepting patients until further notice.
Floyd Free Crockett aged 58 collapsed at Lee's Body Shop on McLeod street and died at Community Hospital. He was born December 13 1906 in Gays City NL and lived in Montana most of his life. Survived by widow a daughter a son and several relatives. funeral service held at Lowry Chapel with cremation at Billings crematory and ashes to Park View Memorial Gardens Livingston.
A large group of top high school music students and instructors performed at Rocky Mountain College in Billings for the district Music Festival. Participants earned ratings across ensembles and soloists including Judy Grosfield, Becky Holcomb, Erin Grosfield, Jeanette Holmberg, and many others with various superior and excellent marks.
