Stockgrowers To Meet In Havre Next Year
The Montana Stock Growers Association chose Havre as the site for the 1988 meeting. Charles Dowlin of Forsyth was re elected president with George Glennon Beaverhead and Julian Terrett Miles Guy as vice presidents. They urged higher tariffs on live stock and beef to curb Canadian competition and continued disease quarantines to limit Argentine entries. A 6 cent green hide and 15 cent dry hide duty was requested. Kendrick amendments to the Packers and Stockyards Act were endorsed and Congress urged to enact them. A duty on beef for the Navy was called for while asserting American beef should supply fleets.

William Powers of Bainville was appointed secretary of state by Governor Erickson, effective May 1. Powers, a longtime banker and farmer, succeeds R. N. Hawkins who served during Charles Stewart’s suspension. Powers is a Democrat with deep civic ties in northeastern Montana and has two daughters and a son.
