Snow Depth at Independence Reaches Seventy Inches
Three men from the soil conservation service Harold Smith Jack Harpley of Big Timber and Glen Herdena of Bozeman visited Independence last Thursday by truck and snow cat. They reported 68 to 70 inches of snow on the Independence snow course with a water content of 25 to 27 inches. The crew reached Chippy Park using the snow cat for the final leg.

Guptill Child Recovering After Glass Windpipe Injury
11 month old Cliff Guptill of Joliet, grandson of Grey residents, was rushed to Deaconess hospital Billings after a jagged piece of glass pierced his windpipe. Doctors removed the shard with a bronchoscope and performed a tracheotomy. The child, under an oxygen tent part of the time, is said to be doing fine after surgery.

ISGHS Band Sets Sights On Festival At Eastern Montana
Seventeen SGHS band students will compete in district solo and ensemble events at Eastern Montana College of Education on Friday April 20. Superior or excellent ratings advance to the state festival two weeks later. Masterpieces include solos by Steensland Malcolm Renneberg Roe Goosey Hale Olness and ensembles such as a Mussagni Brass Sextet and Handel woodwind trio. The 55 member SGHS band also performs Enchanted Lake and Overature Argentina at the festival on April 21 with an evening concert featuring top bands and choirs from classes A B C and D.

MEA Unit Funds Two Scholarships For Future Teachers
The Big Pine Timber MEA unit held its April meeting. A R Collins reported on the Helena delegate assembly of March 22 24. The group set two $75 scholarships per year for two years if applicants meet requirements. The fund now totals $431.90 including 50 from last week’s presentation of The Curious Savage in Livingston.

Pancake Day Draws Sweet Grass Lions to Legion Hall
The Lions club hosts the third annual Pancake Day in Sweet Grass county at the Legion hall Saturday from 7 a m to 7 p m. Receipts support civic projects in the general fund. SGHS band members John Ronneberg Connie Malcolm Carolyn Dahl Marilyn Fraser Clarnelle Day Cheryl Nevin and Kenneth Milebush were selected for the all state band at Missoula during the state music festival May 10-11. William Greig, a former Big Timber resident, died Monday morning of cancer in a Eugene hospital. Funeral services were scheduled for 11 AM at a Catholic church in Eugene. He and Mrs. Greig ran a drug store for years in what is now the Davis & Manley A.G. Market building before relocating to Oregon in 1938.
