Total receipts reached 148 dollars, with a note asking the foot-stuck gentleman to settle promptly.
The local draft board asks for volunteers to fill an April quota of 11 men. If seven or eight are procured it will speed up the drawing. One man, Mr Krone, has already enrolled. more volunteers are wanted.
Will H. Hays of Indianapolis chairman of the Republican National Committee, visited Helena to meet state and local GOP leaders. He spoke on the third Liberty Loan at a packed theater and attended a luncheon with over a hundred citizens before departing for Spokane. The public details of the campaign conference were not released.
Robert Alton of Livingston has advanced from officer candidate to second lieutenant first lieutenant and now captain. A prominent local physician and member of the council of defense, Alton serves as assistant to the divisional adjutant of the Eighth Division. He was born in Livingston and educated locally, later graduating from the University of Ligny School of Law in 1915 and receiving military commission as the war began.
Ben Walker the rancher near Salesville paid $1000 in a case arising from his beating of R H Johnston an instructor at Salesville School. Johnston sued for $2500 and the jury awarded $500 in Johnston's favor after a trial in Helena.
Helena April 6 Jobbers are now purchasing agents and may charge 15 cents a ton commission on coal ordered through them for retail dealers or consumers. The U S Fuel Administration advised operators not obliged to sell directly to dealers or consumers. Regulations state that no commission portion goes back to operators, aiming to end mines using jobbers to share the commission.
Lincoln Neb April 4 President Wilson has not endorsed the Non Partisan League. Jos P Tumulty secretary to the president said in a telegram to R M Joyce president of the Nebraska Council of Defense replying to an inquiry from the council. The president endorses twenty organizations, not the league.
Reports from Bedford Texas and Mulato detail Mexican forces engaging Villa units led by Jose Chaves. Villa's main command reportedly rests in the Polomes mountains southeast of Ojinaga with two hundred sacks of silver bullion valued at $200,000 to be exchanged along the border.
The state council of defense orders all able men to work or face county jail. In Custer county the sheriff will hire out prisoners, with similar action likely here. Idle men around Big Timber salons resist ranch work for high wages, while agitation blames a $120 month talker. The legislature bans such agitation and vagrancy with heavy penalties and fines, enforcing labor for war effort.
Washington forecast by the department of agriculture today predicts 570,000,000 bushels of winter wheat this year, with an implied rise in the spring wheat crop. The forecast shows winter wheat up 209,000,000 bushels from last year's 418,000,000 and a potential total crop near 850,000,000 bushels if spring wheat yields similar gains. Rye also rises by 26,000,000 bushels, boosting bread grain totals by about 225,000,600 bushels, with allied nations and Britain hopeful for wheat gains amid careful harvesting.
