The Big Piney school and all District No. 9 schools opened Tuesday for the 1939 40 term with a bigger enrollment than expected. Many new pupils from outside join to pursue higher learning and to join the school band led by Mr Adolph Roncana. A fuller pupil list will appear next week as more entries are expected.
A large number of entries expected in the Future Farmer Division of the State Fair. Boys in vocational Agriculture will show live stock they raised and supervised farming programs. Divisions include beef, dairy, sheep, hogs, poultry, and crops. Exhibits must be self-raised. About 150 to 200 youths anticipated. housed in the new Youth Building.
Governor Nels H. Smith proclaims September 17 1939 as Constitution Day urging all residents to study the U S Constitution. The proclamation notes adoption of the Constitution in 1787 and references the three government branches and citizens’ rights and duties. Cheyenne date August 29 1939.
President Roose v has moved up Thanksgiving from November 30 to November 23 1940 proclaiming November 2 as Thanksgiving Day in effect. Governors and sports authorities protested and some will not follow the action pledging November 30 as the holiday. The move aimed to widen holiday shopping time between Thanksgiving and Christmas to boost retail trade.
Lieut. J. M. H. Sanderson of the U S Army Air Corps executed an emergency landing after his Warplane sustained severe wheel damage. With wrecked gear and a dangerous fuselage, he circled Aberdeen Md and finally touched down on Chesapeake Bay, refusing to abandon ship until salvage crews arrived. No injuries occurred.
