Colorado Wheat King Award Returns to Colorado Four Times in Five Years

Luther F. Givens of Sterling Colorado won the Pills bury wheat king title at the Chicago contest with Wichita hard red winter wheat testing 61 pounds per bushel. The state has now captured the national honor four times in five years, with judges from Minnesota Kansas Purdue and other institutions. Givens operates an 80 acre farm with hay sugar beets cattle and hogs. Second place went to R E Condon of Platteville Colorado with hard red spring wheat. The contest began in 1941 and Colorado has repeatedly led national wheat honors.

Washington War Assets Corporation outlines surplus items for farmers including farmland holdings about 10 000 acres and up to 100 000 acres overall with demand outstripping supply. Farm equipment policy excludes strictly agricultural gear though tractors and trucks may be repurposed for farming. Longtime Dunnell Farm Resident Counts 71 Years

Fairmont Daily Sentinel found Ellsworth Ziemer and C. K. Peterson still farming birthplaces in the area, but FP. S. E. Carlson stands out with over 71 years on the same Dunnell farm since his birth in 1874. He remains on the family site with his wife and son.

Harrisburg honors 1915 Pennsylvania potato champion

Mervin Ranes of Stewardstown produced 656 bushels of potatoes on a measured acre to win Pennsylvania’s 1915 champion potato grower title. The growers’ cooperative awarded the honor at a Harrisburg dinner.

Indian Fighter Knight Dies in Tulsa at 105

William Franklin Knight, a storied frontier rider who knew figures such as Custer and Geronimo, died in Tulsa at 105. Born on a steamboat in Missouri, he joined Texas stage coach advance guards in 1866, ferried messages for Wells Fargo, survived multiple gunshot wounds, and hauled buffalo hides before retiring at 90. No immediate relatives found.

One Third of U S Population Lacks Library Access

Washington report notes about 35 million Americans, mainly rural, have no library access. Senators Hill and Douglass and Rep Taft Douger introduce bills for federal grants of 25 000 per state with potential $50 000 matching funds for rural library work. 586 counties lack public libraries. Texas leads with 150, Kentucky 63, Louisiana and Mississippi 85 each. Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island and Vermont have public libraries in every county.
