The Lions Club led a large community effort to fence Big Piney Municipal Airport. Almost four miles of fencing were erected using varied post materials, inviting evaluation of durability while highlighting strong local participation and broad support from companies and residents.
Paul N Scherbel announces his bid for mayor in Big Piney ahead of the May 9 1961 election. He pledges to finish sewer and water project details expand airport funding improve town publicity reduce utility rates and pursue street resurfacing landscaping and natural gas service while stressing law and order and clearer employee duties. He invites discussion with local groups on plans and policies.
Thirty nine Hereford bulls sold in Kemmerer last Thursday with modest prices. Covey and Dayton of Cokeville showed the champion bull, bought by Bill Boon, Pine Dale, for 710 dollars. The reserve champion bull sold for 475 dollars. Sur Valley Hereford Ranch consigned the champion pair sold to Lee Nebukur Green River for 500 each. Overall sale average reached 401 dollars.
A May Day event hosted by the Primary Association at the LDS church featured talks on May Day World Good Will Day and Mother's Day. Children presented poems songs and games then danced around the May Pole with Terry Harris crowned queen and Paul Miley king.
The Annual Convention of Dis 1 The American Legion Department of Wyoming will be held Friday May 5 in Pine Dale. A joint banquet with the American Legion Auxiliary is planned at 6 00 p m followed by the meeting. Department Commander Robert A Gish Basin will be speaker at the banquet. District officers include Day Evang Green River and Wiskey 8 Anthrud Evanston. District 1 includes Green River Fort Bridger La Barge Pineville Kemmen er Rock Springs and other towns.
The soil conservation office reports a final snow survey by Jack Harmon and Forest Service staff. Snow and water totals are below normal in most areas with readings from Snyder Basin to Sula Lake and Tipia Post showing deficient levels. Bids open May 16 for a two bedroom one story cottage with basement and attached garage in Cheyenne. plans available from Wyoming Game and Fish Department.
The Wyoming Game and Fish Department seeks bids for construction of four residences at the Boulder Rearing Station south of Pinedale. Chester C. Anderson, chief of Technical Services, announced the department plans.
Lois Koch, local home demonstration agent, promotes National Home Demonstration Week in Sublette County with plans for Homemaker's Achievement Day and a banquet. Exhibits will showcase crafts, needlework, gift wrapping, and candy tipping. speakers include state and county council leaders Mrs Calla Johnson and Mrs Mardell Fear. Garth J. Nicholls marks a birthday with a home gathering.
Warut Woolgrowers and the Sublette wool pool will be sold on Wednesday May 10 at 2 00 PM in Rock Springs for buyers inspection that day. Members urged to pass as much wool as possible in the warehouse.
The Kemmerer festival crowned two bands and three choruses for top honors. Lyman High School band directed by Richard Anderson earned a superior rating from Dr. Daniel Martino. Star Valley High School band led by Wayne Smith also won a superior trophy. Choruses led by Louis R. Putsche, Star Valley High School’s B. Smith, and Douglas Kingdon’s Cokeville chorus received superior ratings. Other participating bands and choirs earned excellent or very good marks.
