Ripley Churns Tales on Goering and World News

A peculiar collage of notes recalls Robert Ripley's claims about Hermann Goering and a Jewish doctor in Tyrol who raised him, then shifts to brisk vignettes from Manhattan and Berlin. The piece riffs on Nazi headlines, synagogues, clock shortages at Grand Central, Goebbels captions, and satirical asides from broadcasters and public figures.

Nitrogen boosts wartime hay and pasture yields, OSU says

Dr. D H Dodd of Ohio State University reports that applying nitrogen nearly 150 pounds per acre to Timothy or other hay grasses by April 1 can add about one ton of protein hay per acre when cut early. Nitrogen on pasture speeds grazing readiness by two to three weeks and increases yearly yield by 700 to 1,000 pounds per acre with 175 to 250 pounds of protein per acre. A first pasture treatment including 20 to 30 pounds of nitrogen with phosphorus or potash may raise first year returns by 40 to 75 percent.

Truman committee to push civilian goods restarts

Washington notes that the Truman committee plans a report urging broader civilian production after war contracts slow cancellations. It cites canceled contracts, ample steel and aluminum stocks, and slow civilian reactivation, with limited essential items to resume. The piece also covers labor comparisons, Littell’s land payment role, and English strike data.

Youthful Preacher's Sea Metaphor Riles Sailors

A young preacher addressing seamen tries to illustrate with sea imagery. He likens a captain to a ship in a twisting channel with swift currents. The tale ends with the ship running aground and the preacher exclaiming a dramatic question while an old sailor dryly notes his prattle.
