Prolonged Spring Grazing Boosts Wild Hay Forage Quality
A seven year study led by James Jensen at Big Piney Wyoming and the Intermountain Forest and Range Experiment Station shows prolonged spring grazing of wild hay meadows increases total forage yield by 8 percent and raises protein by 20 percent and minerals by 16 percent. Grazing 20 to 36 days longer improves hay quality and growth, with later mowing yielding greener, younger hay and stronger beef gains. The research, begun in 1936, indicates delaying haying beyond early spring can boost long term forage productivity on foothill ranges.
