The morning broke warm and clear as crowds rode and walked to celebrate the nation’s holiday. Oscar Beck opened exercises with C P MacGlashan and Analt Tanner. a Declaration of Independence reading followed before a full afternoon of races, relays, chariot and bandbox contests with local riders and horses pacing to victory.
Joée Stall won the main race with Niethreco as favorite though an outsider took the money. N H Leonard of Salt Lake City nabbed first place, Arthur Bleck finished second. The little girls and boys heats amused the crowd. Bucking contests featured Tex owned by Tom Connora, Dos Haddenham on a gray pony, Walter Myers on a big D E horse, and Frank Cunnington on a small drone. Dutch Daniela placed second on a gray DK bron e. Wild horse race provided chaotic action and an impromptu fist fight ended amicably. The evening closed with dancing at Budd's ball into the early morning.
The festival will be held Saturday evening July 12 in the Big Bandsy school tent at Cottonwood settlement. Ice cream will be served and proceeds go to a fund to buy an organ for the Sunday school. Committee members are Starmont, Gill Rouser and Stevens.
In Kemmerer Wyoming on July 7 1913 readers share compliments about the paper and ads praising its layout. Town visitors include T L Fleming and family and Billie Woods of Wood Oswald Childs Co. A U S Commissioner Judge C W Holden is noted for land business, and races run smoothly with W E Mills praised. A store burglary at J B Nichols Co is reported. Geo Huddleston returns with fishing gear for Mac Gilaben dwelling.
Judge Dodge returns from Smiths Fork with Salt Lake City captain showing interest in B. G. Griggs copper property and plans for operation. Numerous notes on travel, hospitality, milling activity, town visits, upcoming fishing trips, a brick kiln project, haying, and local business updates across Piney and surrounding towns.
Fred Ivey, longtime bookkeeper for Big Piney Mercantile, died in New Mexico last March after attempting to improve his health by high altitude climate. He was a North Carolina native who spent most of his life in Florida and worked in Big Piney before seeking relief from a white plague illness.
