Funeral rites for Fred Eklund of Pinedale held in Finedale

Funeral services were held for 74 year old Fred Eklund of Pinedale who died after a heart attack. Burial followed in Pinedale cemetery. Eklund born in Jonkoping Sweden came to Sublette county in 1913 owning Hart ranch then Fayette ranch until retiring last year. Survivors include wife Helen a half brother John Alvin of Wyoming half sister Ruth Johnson of Cheyenne a sister Ettee Nelson of Spokane two grandchildren Dorothy Eklund and Frederick L. Eklund and two great grandchildren Jim my and Gennes Anderson of Salt Lake City.

Extension horticulturist Ayres to start July 1 in Laramie

Lloyd Charles Ayres, named Extension horticulturist forester, begins work July 1 per G H Star director of the Agricultural Extension Service. He replaces retiree W Q Edmundson and comes from South Dakota State College where he served since 1959 as Extension horticulturist. Ayres previously worked as a U S Fish and Wildlife Service biologist in Pierre S D from 1949 to 1951 and held posts at South Dakota State College. He holds a Master’s in Botany 1963 and a B S in Plant Science from SDAC. He attended Arkansas A M College Monticello in 1943-44.

Sublette County Artist Guild meets and moose permits draw

Sublette artists meet June 16 at Dan Budd Lynch home with a Homecoming theme. First prize to Mary Hulburt Scott, second to Betty Blake. Separately, Wyoming Game and Fish reports 2 660 resident and 882 nonresident moose permit applicants and 411 residents plus 217 nonresidents for mountain sheep. July 7 drawing in Cheyenne with notice to successful applicants.

Record crowds at Big Piney rodeos and Rendezvous show

The two day event drew large crowds with rough riding and spills. Riders like Benny Pearson and Tuffy Davis suffered injuries while Bucking stock tested riders. Officials and volunteers such as Bus Fear and Gordon Milkelon ran a tight show. Final results cover Saddle Bronc Bareback Bull Riding and horse races at the Big Piney airport with prizes and a community barbecue to cap the Rendezvous.

Bids On Big Piney West Road Rejected

The state highway commission dropped over $350 000 from highway contracts opened last Thursday by rejecting one bid worth 3 575 82 for plant mix surfacing and sealing on five miles of the Big Piney West road and cattle guards near Big Piney. The project will be reopened at the August 4 5 meeting.

County 4-H home economics judging at Big Piney

Big Piney hosts the first county home economics judging contest on June 1 with 4-H members from Sublette and Sweetwater counties. Top scorers include Joga Binning 287 Marion Grinderggz 278 Deanne Fear 284 and Charlene Raper 278. The best two scores will be totaled to select the winner.
