Fertilizer Yields Boost When Drilled Near Roots
County agents report average yields of 1700 pounds on fertilized plots, a 77 percent rise, with no burn even at 65 pounds of actual nitrogen per acre. Best results came from drilling phosphorus at the roots, timing fertilizer 83 days before cutting, and applying in early spring. Manure needs moisture to decompose and is less effective on dry, shallow soils.

Nitrogen Shortage Affects Meadow Hay Quality
In soil and organic matter, microbes need carbon and nitrogen. Grass roots supply carbon but often lack nitrogen, slowing organic matter decomposition and creating turf or peat. Meadows suffer low hay yields and poor quality until commercial nitrogen is added at spaced intervals to feed plants and decompose roots.
