Sheep Grazing Permit Granted By Forest Rules
Rock Springs Wy December 17 a decision of vast importance to stockmen whose docks graze on the public domain was announced by T S Taliaferro Jr Rock Springs attorney who said he had been notified the chief forester in Washington provided cattlemen formerly having permits upon the Wyoming national forest will be allowed to graze a proportional number of sheep at their election. The decision is of special interest to farmers of Sublette and Lincoln counties as well as communities generally and regards a matter that has been pending for several years. In spring 1927 cattlemen desired to change grazing privileges on the Wyoming national forest from cattle to sheep but were denied by the foreast service. In September of the same year an appeal to the board of appeals to the forest service was denied. A second appeal to the district forester sustained the board of appeals. From the decision the district forester an appeal was taken to the chief forester in Washington who notified Mr Taliaferro that the former cattlemen who had gone into the sheep business would be allowed to make the exchange and that sheep grazing permits formerly issued to the applicants would be allowed. The cattlemen of the Green River valley have long opposed transfers and will counteract the decision. The Green River valley has been a cattle raising area for the past decade and it has been said cattle and sheep cannot be grazed in the same territory. Sublette County Cattle Growers Association and allied associations have fought this for years and will continue. A meeting of the Sublette County Cattle Growers Association was held in Pinedale last Saturday to discuss the matter. Resolutions will be drafted and sent to forest officials in Washington for consideration.
