Robbers broke into the State Bank of Big Piney late Friday night and attempted to drill the safe but failed. They rifled through desk drawers and fled. Officers investigate the burglary with no arrests or tests yet.
Nine killed and 127 injured in February traffic accidents, with 423 total mishaps in the month. Casper led incorporated towns with 82 incidents while Cheyenne had 49, the lowest in five years. First two months of the year align closely with 1958 figures despite higher road use.
The State Department of Agriculture found frequent errors in weighing and measuring devices across facilities. Registered service personnel, not inspectors, should perform adjustments. impersonating inspectors may incur fines up to 500 dollars. Of 1337 devices tested in January and February, 25 were condemned, but many were out of tolerance and caused overstatements of weight. A dairy plant reported losses of about 46 percent of milk due to faulty equipment, prompting an inspection request.
Fort Bridger Wyoming confident student Miss Dorothy Micheli will speak at the High School Monday evening April 8. She will share pictures from Switzerland and recount her travels across the state while on Tetum from Switzerland, with reports praising her as a capable young speaker.
Readings for April over nineteen years show average temp near 60 degrees with high around 76 and record high in the 90s. Low around 50 with record low near 40. Moisture for 1956 was 4.83 inches, below long term average. spring period April May June totals about 1.2 inches below average. Snow course data from Thurman Harmon and Ragsdale indicate variable snowfall and water content across Snider Basin Poison Meadows Pinney LaBarge and South Cottonwood Creek readings, with several years showing below average precipitation and water content but notable 1956 moisture lows.
A corrective action by the department followed by no new notices of shortages. 21 of 24 meters tested for petrol products showed short measure, with some as high as 2 gallons per 100 delivered. The division has begun testing this meter type while urging support for the Heart Fund.
Paul N. Shherbel resigns from the Soil Conservation Service to start a private practice in land surveying and range and pasture management. Dana A. Fosher will replace him as Work Unit Conservationist in Big Piney, transferring from Glenrock. Fosher, a 1951 University of Wyoming graduate in Range Management, will begin duties April 22 in Big Piney with his wife and two children.
The Primary association of the LDS church held a program Sunday evening in the Legion belt. Children opened with the song We Bloom Our Heads. Joleen McWilliams gave the opening prayer and Mrs. Paul Scherbel welcomed attendees.
Belle Budd seventeen from Big Piney Wyoming was elected to FARM JOURNAL magazine’s National Teen Board. She is among one hundred outstanding rural girls chosen nationwide to advise Polly editor of FARM JOURNAL's teen department. Budd has led FHA and 4-H, presides over FHA, and will study elementary education at college.
Opening details for Big Piney Public Library in Sublette County announced for May 6 from 2 to 4 pm in the town church building. Regulation notes outline borrowing rules, residency eligibility, deposits, loan periods, fines, and library board members. Mrs Donald Wesenberg named librarian.
The Leathercraft group met March 23 at 2:00 in the Legion hall with five members present. They worked on projects and studied health topics, collecting a 60 cent prize fund. Jill Clark won the door prize. The next meeting is set for April 20 at 2:00 in the Legion Mall.
Dr Gerald W Davis of Denver plans to locate in Big Piney after his June internship at St Anthony's Hospital. Lions Club chairman John Bvenild reports the committee secured the doctor and his wife Dame to settle here. The couple will return in May to finalize a home and clinic needs.
A Wyoming congressman Keith Thomson introduced H R 6881 proposing a Bear River Compact among Wyoming Idaho and Utah. The bill calls for an interstate admin agency the Bear River commission with nine members and possible presidential appointee chair. It aims to remove causes of future controversy over water distribution and use and to recognize existing storage and certain water rights. Senate Bill 1085 has been referred to the Senate Interior Committee.
A card party to aid the Public Library is set at the Legion hall on Monday April 8. The event invites community members to attend for a charitable social afternoon.
