Biddeford Saco Youth Recreation committee withdraws from this year's Community Chest drive to build membership and promote a year round recreation plan. President John Gibson said the group hopes to reapply in 1960 as the drive goal is cut to 28,700.
Alice Janson of Biddeford and Saco Coal retires as manager and assistant treasurer after 43 years with the fuel company. She began in 1916 as a clerk, became office manager and training supervisor, then executive secretary, aiding growth from coal to oil and service trucks for Biddeford Saco and Kennebunk areas.
A Mt. Vernon school bus carrying students and teachers collided head on with a diesel tank truck near Cooper Texas. Eight people were killed including six students and two teachers and twenty two others injured. The collision occurred Tuesday night at a highway intersection.
A wry adage notes that nothing is more embarrassing than seeing the boss attempt something you claimed could not be done. The quip is attributed to Gen. Fea. Corp. and reflects office humor about restraint and pride.

A Braniff Airways turboprop airliner departing Houston en route to Washington exploded in the air and crashed onto the R. E. White farm near Buffalo, Texas killing 34 aboard. The 75 passenger plane had 28 passengers and six crew. no immediate cause is known.
A morning fire on Hearn road, Saco, destroyed a barn storing farm equipment belonging to Kenneth Meserve, estimated loss four to five thousand dollars. Firemen confined the blaze to the structure after a hay-fed inferno threatened a nearby house occupied by Mr and Mrs Malcolm Stackpole.
Meserve assessed the loss at four to five thousand dollars for equipment not including the barn value. The land and adjoining house belong to Meserve, who also owns the barn. Mr and Mrs Malcolm Stackpole reside in the house.
Two 17 year olds, Gilbert Lavigne and Robert Dubois, were sentenced by Judge Hilary Mahaney in Saco Municipal Court for stealing a car radio from a Saco Steel vehicle. Fines of 25 dollars or 60 days in jail were imposed. the youths claimed permission to take a clutch from another car.
George W. Curtis 36, of Rockland, Maine, left a trawler and joined passengers ashore a luxury liner voyage after an appendicitis scare. Doctors advised no operation and Curtis returned ashore near Cape Race with other travelers.
President Eisenhower announced an apparent October 2 deadline for progress toward a voluntary settlement of the 78 day old steel strike. He met with industry executives led by U S Steel chairman Roger M Blough and with United Steelworkers president David J McDonald to urge renewed negotiations and a fair settlement for the public.
An AP survey finds curfews among New England towns debated as ineffective or unnecessary amid teenage gang violence. Maine cities like Augusta and Gardiner use or sparsely enforce curfews while Portland keeps a law on the books but does not enforce it.
The Saco Teachers association opened the fall session with a supper meeting at the School Street Methodist church. Forty members attended and discussed a poll to form a teachers credit union, with updates on new staff and PTA goals.
