Hundreds of new measures become law on October 1 including postable prescription drug costs in pharmacies, raise in minimum wage to 2.30, stronger animal cruelty protections and free medical exams for rape victims. Optometrists gain topical drug use and ski lift tampering becomes a misdemeanor.
Webber Hospital representatives told a Southern Maine health committee that a new Alfred Road facility costing about 12 million dollars is needed for efficiency and future growth. They argue renovations won t solve all problems and a new site would attract new physicians while critics warn of higher costs and impact on local families.
Saco seeks $105,000 in community development funds as the sole applicant in its category with a Sept. 30 deadline. City officials had previously hoped for $147,000 after HUD redirected earlier allocations, and a July HUD notice confirmed the available $105,000.
