Detroit AP General Motors announces a 49 dollar, 1.6 percent average rise in 1969 sticker prices, lighter than Chrysler’s 84 dollar, 2.9 percent jump. GM reverses ruling to include federally required headrests, making them optional until January 1969.
Vice President Hubert Humphrey, campaigning in Ohio, repeats that some troop withdrawals should be possible soon and seeks a gradual reduction of American forces with Saigon leaders. He notes no conflict with President Johnson's timing and declines a firm 1969 start. Wallace says war can be won with conventional forces, while Nixon launches a Republican counter campaign. Muskie resumes campaigning with planned stops in West Virginia and Pennsylvania.
Two Avianca airliners hijacked from Barranquilla to Cuba with 139 aboard landed in Camaguey and Santiago de Cuba. Both flights ended without injuries and crews returned to Colombia. Officials ponder whether the incidents are connected with Cuban asylum. locals say one hijacker may be a smuggler.

The 13,000 member union seeks a 25 percent wage raise over three years retroactive to July 1, while carriers offer about 9 percent over 18 months with current averages at $3.27 an hour.
About 200 worshipers walked out at St Matthew's Cathedral as Cardinal O'Boyle read a pastoral letter backing Pope Paul VI's anti birth control encyclical. The walkout, echoed in other churches, followed a split with 44 priests challenging the papal interpretation. The cardinal warned disobedience could invite a curse from Deuteronomy.
About 50 Lower East Side hippies paid five dollars each and boarded a bus from St Mark's Place for a day trip to Queens. The group described the outing as a cultural exchange and aimed to surprise suburbanites by viewing their lawns, bowling alleys, and other middle class sights. The tour ended with nude body painting at Nirvana Headshop in Hillside. Bob Lake, normally a Manhattan bus tour operator, guided the excursion.
