President Thieu announced South Vietnamese forces will take on more mobile operations to enable phased allied withdrawals by year end 1969. He said ARVN will assume greater combat roles but not all allied responsibilities. In Kien Hoa Province he spoke to newsmen on pacification efforts.
The Red Feather Community Chest fund aims to raise 46731 this year to support agencies in Biddeford and Saco. Agencies include Kennebec Girl Scout Council Pine Tree Council USO Biddeford Saco Public Health Nursing Services and others with 198 last year reaching 4539 percent of goal. The drive runs October to November with a kickoff parade October 7 featuring local bands and groups.
Montgomery Ward and Co announces a grand opening at 69 Alfred Street Biddeford for Thursday with Richard G. McCallum named manager. The store will carry the complete catalog line and appliances and offer four to five day delivery. Mrs McCallum will work there. McCallum is a Thorn ton Academy graduate and U S Marine Corps veteran. Additional Maine outlets are planned including Lisbon Falls Ellsworth and seven stores in total this year.
The Diocese of Portland approves a non degree certificate program for Catholic religion teaching to begin the week of Oct 7 at St Francis College. Centers will be in Sanford Biddeford Portland and Lewiston with at least 20 students per center. Fifteen week courses meet weekly for 2 3 4 hours and 30 credit hours earn certificates.
John Roberts York County judge of probate and committee chairman announced the Biddeford Republican headquarters opening on York County red St tonight. Attending will be sheriff candidate Garnache county commissioner Walker county attorney Rust register of probate Smith and other district and state legislative candidates including Webster Logan Doyle Crosby Tyndale Brickates Descoteaux Hocter Hildreth Jr. The event opens with a caravan from Kennebunk and is open to all voters.
