Democrats Hear Speakers At Field Day In Biddeford

At Alumni field in Biddeford on Sunday hundreds attended the 19th annual Democratic field day where most major candidates spoke. Lucia Cormier of Rumford was ill and unable to attend. Senator Edmund S. Muskie served as master of ceremonies after opening remarks by Mayor Clement H. Deschambault. Congressman James C. Oliver, seeking re election, urged backing for a stronger M 60 machine gun contract and passage of a distressed area bill. Fellow candidate Governor Frank Coffin contrasted party platforms and faulted Republicans for lacking a work oriented program.

In Biddeford municipal court a white haired elderly woman admitted drinking as her biggest problem. A teen with his first brush with the law spoke in a repetitive mood after two days in city jail. An elderly man sobbed as he recounted hitchhiking with his dog because buses and trains refused to carry him and his pet toward Auburn.

York Beach Police Chief to Meet Board on Resignation

York Beach Maine AP Arthur Perkins planned to discuss his verbal resignation with the Board of Assessors after citizens asked Gov. Reed for help with alleged state law violations. Perkins cited an understaffed force and opposed liquor-sale efforts as part of his move. Local civic leaders disputed that the liquor issue was the motive. Florida AP Tropical storm Florence shadowed Donna's path offshore with 50 to 55 mph winds and a forecast turn toward Cuba as Donna battered the Atlantic coast to New England.

Bergeron Announces Candidacy for Biddeford Councilman At Large

Rudolph A. Bergeron of 7 Victory Lane Biddeford announces his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for councilman at large. He says he is part of a group supporting Mayor Fred Warner and his platform of opportunity for Biddeford. Crash in Guam War Plane Disaster Claims 76 Lives

A World Airways DC6B transport crash on Mt Barrigada near Agana Guam killed at least 76 people, most U S military personnel and families. Seventeen survived initially but one died later. Rescue workers with machetes and bolos reached the wreckage, and the aircraft had departed Clark Air Base bound for Guam before the fatal takeoff.
