Union workers in Biddeford urged to accept latest company offer after eight hour mediation. First shift workers will leave early at 2 30 PM to attend at St John s Hall while second shift reports after the meeting. If accepted, a midnight strike by 900 members at the Saco plant will be averted.
Management at the Saco Lowell plant pulled the contract offer on Monday and stated the company was not interested in further meetings as U S mediation and conciliation efforts continue amid labor talks.
A mediation service arranged talks between opposing sides and convened a lengthy eight hour bargaining session described as hard by Schoonjans. The meeting aimed to avert a strike and was continued on the next page.
Civil Air Patrol planes searched three states for a four passenger Cessna 172 carrying Herbert Brooks 38 and Beverly Brooks 33 missing after departing Skyhaven Airport Wells Maine on a round trip to Hartford Conn. The couple operate restaurants in Wells and Ogunquit Maine and were visiting Mrs Brooks sisters in Connecticut.
Police Chief Laurence O. Sanborn submitted his resignation to the board of selectmen and asked for it to take effect Saturday. Board chair James MacIntire said Sgt. Herbert Bennett would likely be named acting police chief until a replacement is hired.

Voters approved amendments to the town charter by 575 to 149 with 12 spoiled ballots. Districts five and four show strong support while district one tied. Councilman Shorey remains in office through his term end.
Portland AP reports Sanford remains among about 85 communities in 43 states still under consideration for the federal atom smasher site. The Atomic Energy Commission told Sen. Muskie that 200 communities were initially suggested for the 200 billion electron volt accelerator, with 85 remaining. The next step is NAS site evaluation recommendations.
Saco Mayor Paul E. Reny urged management and the labor union at the Saco-Lowell New England Division of Maremont Corp to resolve their differences before a midnight deadline. He noted local residents fear a strike or plant shutdown and expressed optimism they could reach an agreement.
