Escape Fiery Plane Crash At LaGuardia

An American Airlines Electra turboprop with 75 aboard struck a dike at LaGuardia during landing and burst into flames. Six passengers were rushed to Flushing Hospital, others treated for injuries as crews fought the blaze. no fatalities reported. Captain Gordon Staples led the flight followed by First Officer Herbert Schleicher and others. Supervisory pilot Sheldon Pangburn said a downdraft contributed to the crash.

Biddeford Firm Wins Biddeford High School Contract

The Biddeford School Building committee awarded the general contract for the new Biddeford High School to Raymond A. Plante company of Biddeford. Plante’s bid was the only one submitted and, after negotiations to cut costs, the price dropped from 749000 to 723892. Construction is expected to start soon with a 350 day timeline and a signed contract anticipated within days. The project was originally bid at over 771000 and several bids were rejected.

Bombers collide over Atlantic. one lands at Shannon

Two US Air Force B47 bombers collided over the Atlantic. One ditched, the other landed at Shannon Airport in Ireland after a three-plane flight from Plattsburgh to Norton, England. Three crewmen aboard the ditched craft were reported as missing with rescue planes scouring very rough seas.

Rev. Lochwen Gregory, 27, of Oroville California and Owen Allen, 26, of Pitchers Massachusetts completed a 2 025 mile hike that began in Oglethorpe Georgia 99 days ago. They reached Mount Katahdin after the Appalachian Trail trek.
