Pillsbury and Bass win NH GOP primary clashes

In New Hampshire John Pillsbury defeated Gov. Wessex Powell by 15,582 votes for the four-year term while Rep. Perkins Bass won the four-yearBridge’s short term nomination with 31,043 votes. Bridges and Powell trailed, final counts show. Powell criticized the Union Leader editor and a Catholic appointee while Bass attacked Mrs. Bridges as conserva tive against progress.

Augusta Girl Survives Month-Long Coma Battle

An 11-year-old Augusta girl, Chevyl Marble, has recovered enough to be home after a month in a coma following critical injuries from an East Winthrop highway crash on Aug. 3. She was discharged Tuesday from a Waterville hospital after brain operations.

Alpha 66 claims attack on three Cuban and British ships

Miami AP reporting that Alpha 66, based in Puerto Rico, says its raiders machine gunned the San Pascual, the San Blas, and the British freighter Newlane off Cape Frances near Cuba. The group says helicopters pursued them for 40 miles, but no casualties were reported and raiders returned safely to their Caribbean base.

Steel Company Officials Testify In Senate Inquiry

Steel executives told the Senate Judiciary Committee that subpoenaed production cost data would aid foreign competitors and harm domestic steel rivals against aluminum, plastic, and glass substitutes. Representing Republic Steel and three others, Thomas E. Patton argued the subpoenas are burdensome and may be invalid, risking a court test on congressional power to compel disclosure. Contempt actions could carry a $1,000 fine or a year in jail.

Old Tigress Ingrown Toenails A Zoo Vet Performs

Dr Charles P Gandal at the Bronx Zoo treated an 18 year old tigress named Dacca for two ingrown nails. Using a tranquilizing injection he calmed the animal and with bone cutters removed inch and a half from each claw. The procedure finished without incident.

Spy Soble Brother Freed From Prison

Washington report says Jack Soble, a confessed spy, was released Aug. 31 from Danbury federal prison hours after the death of his brother Robert A. Soblen, who died in a London hospital. Soblen had fled a U S life sentence and was linked to a major Soviet spy ring. Soble testified at Soblen’s 1961 trial.

Airport Parade, Church Plans Parish Hall in Saco

Land adjacent to Most Holy Trinity church in Saco will host a new parish hall as Catholic Women’s Club announces fundraising approval. Four Eyed As Choice To Succeed Maynard

Portland AP speculation centers on four men as possible successors to Thomas L. Maynard who withdrew Tuesday as Democratic candidate for Congress in Maine’s 1st District. Ronald J. Kellam has formally announced. others mentioned are Clyde Bartlett, Richard J. Dubord, and James C. Oliver. The new candidate will be chosen September 19 in Portland by the district committee. Maynard, 55, recovering from heart illness, said his decision was based on avoiding a handicapped campaign. Republican challenger to Tupper is not named in the passage.
