London Hilton Bombing Kills Three at Park Lane

A bomb exploded in the Hilton Hotel lobby near Buckingham Palace at lunchtime, killing three and injuring 38. A second device was found and dismantled as police suspect IRA terrorists in a wave of nine days of bombings.

Israel Egypt Sign Second Interim Peace Pact in Geneva

Israel and Egypt signed a second interim peace agreement in a brief ceremony boycotted by the United States and the Soviet Union. Egyptian delegate General Taha El Magdub and Israeli chief Mordekhay Gazith signed for their countries as U.N. observers and new boundary lines near the Gidi and Mitla Passes were noted in accompanying maps.

County Treasurer Threatens To Quit Over Staff Firings

County treasurer Carl Sheltra threatened resignation over firings of key personnel in county offices. He cited payroll fears and warned he would reinstate Doris Camire and her daughter Celina, both fired after long service, while accusing commissioners of retaliation and illegal dismissal.

AG Suit Hearing Monday in York County Court

Preparations are under way for the attorney general's appearance Monday in York County Superior Court in Alfred. Atty. Gen. Joseph Brennan will be represented by deputy John Benoit and assistant S. Kirk Studstrup as they seek an injunction to force county action on the budget and warrants for 28 municipalities. The suit targets Commissioners Clement Auger Donald Cote and Paul Reny and Treasurer Carl Sheltra for failing to mail tax bills on Sept. 1.

McDonald’s Withdraws $10,000 Reward for Bus Shooting

McDonald’s Hamburgers Corp cancels its reward for information leading to arrest in the July shooting of a McDonald’s courtesy bus in Saco. No tips have come in since the offer on July 25, and spokesman says few would come forth now. Bus driver Kenneth Charles was grazed on the forehead but not seriously hurt.

Robin and lark incidents hit bus route near Old Orchard Beach

A gunman shot out a bus window near Charles head, then a similar earlier shooting prompted McDonald’s threats to remove the bus. No passengers were aboard. Saco police chief Alfred Cote says one suspect exists but not enough evidence for arrest. A rifle tested in Augusta was ruled out.

Sevigny Seeks Back Pay After Maine Court Ruling

Former Biddeford tax assessor Richard Sevigny battles for damages after the Maine Supreme Court remanded his case to determine back pay from April 1970 to December 1973. His lawyer says the ruling questions due process and whether the single assessor post was properly abolished or reinstated. Sevigny, now with the Maine Homebuilder's Association, calls the decision “great” and prepares to present figures on what was paid versus what should have been paid.

Sudan Coup Fails as Numairi Loyalists Retake Radio

In Khartoum a group of officers attempted to topple President Jaafar Numairi but were routed within two hours. Rebels led by Major Hassan Hussein Osman were said killed. Forces loyal to Numairi regained control of key sites and reported calm in the capital.
