Kennedy backs tax reform bill in Senate hearing

Treasury Secretary David M Kennedy criticized the House tax reform bill as too generous to some taxpayers and too costly for corporations yet praised it as a milestone and urged its prompt enactment. Desert search fails to locate missing bishop James Pike

In the Judean desert near the Dead Sea AP reports troops policemen and aircraft scoured the area for 56 year old Dr James Pike former Episcopal bishop of California missing since Monday night after his car became stranded eight miles west of the Dead Sea His wife 21 left the hills and walked to a road workers camp describing their desert excursion and Pike's leg pain before he asked her to continue She said he rested atop a small mountain six to seven miles west of the Dead Sea Four theories explain his disappearance including refuge in caves danger from wildlife heat exposure or possible aid from Bedouin nomads with the search ongoing and no confirmed evidence yet of his fate

Air Force plans about 50000 cut in manpower

Washington AP reports the Air Force will announce a cutback of about 50,000 officers and men, boosting total U.S. armed forces reductions past 150,000 as the services cut costs.
