Outdoor fire ban in Biddeford Saco and Old Orchard Beach area

Maine Forest Service issued a regionwide campfire ban until further notice. Fire chiefs coordinated with state forestry officials to halt campfire permits and prepare crews for Labor Day weekend. Public is urged to use designated Forest Service and Highway sites for cook fires and aid in preventing fires. Private landowner patrols and lumber camps will be guarded during the holiday. Continuous dry spell has raised fire danger statewide.

Maremont Vows to Boost Saco-Lowell Plant Capacity

Arnold H. Maremont president of Maremont Co. has acquired 52 percent of Saco-Lowell stock and pledged to raise the Edwards plant to full capacity. He will continue Nu-Era muffler production and pursue new contracts while praising Edwards management and workforce. An estimated 800 more employees could be hired if capacity hits 100 percent.
