Marines Hunt Viet Cong After Da Nang Chu Lai Attacks

U S Marines pursued Viet Cong guerrillas around Da Nang and Chu Lai after mortars and attacks damaged Marble Mountain airstrip and the Da Nang base. Officials counted 39 guerrillas killed near Marble Mountain and 2 at Chu Lai. The raid disabled two helicopters and two bombers and damaged many aircraft.

College Viet Nam protest mostly small in size says AP poll

A nationwide AP survey of 85 colleges finds Viet Nam and anti draft protests are a tiny minority on campuses. Officials report 25 or fewer involved among 12 000 plus students at some schools and 100 to 150 anti Viet Nam activists at Michigan. Only a few campuses show organized dissent while most students remain conservative.

Halloween Trick or Treat Moved to Saturday Night

Officials from Biddeford Saco and Old Orchard Beach announced Halloween will be observed Saturday night to align with the UNICEF drive. City leaders and the council said door to door collecting by children would take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. As Sunday Halloween conflicted with the year, residents welcomed the change.

Marden Declines Gubernatorial Candidacy

Former Maine State Senate President Robert A. Marden of Waterville says he will not seek elective office. Republican headquarters circulated his statement. Rep. James S. Erwin of York is the only announced GOP candidate and Gov. Reed plans to run again.

First Snow of Season Hits Central Maine

Central Maine saw more than an inch of snow with dozens of minor skidding accidents reported by State Police. No injuries but widespread property damage occurred as Augusta radio dispatch urged drivers to adjust to winter conditions. Flight service noted one inch by 8 a.m. with the storm tapering by late forenoon.
