Maine draft call eyes married men for December

Maine received a December draft quota of 192 men. The state director said childless married men are likely to be drafted to meet the need, with calls possible starting in January. The plan follows the Selective Service category order, placing married men without children after single men and volunteers.

Lloyd H. Elliott Distinguished Professorship Created at UMaine

The University of Maine established the Lloyd H. Elliott Distinguished Professorship in honor of former president Dr. Lloyd H. Elliott. The chair naming was announced Wednesday, with department location undisclosed. Elliott led the university for seven years before resigning to take a similar post at George Washington University.

In a Senate House conference the Dickey Lincoln power project on the St John River in Maine won approval to remain in the omnibus water projects bill. Helicopter Crashes In Vietnam Near Plei Me Action

Eight Americans were killed in two helicopter crashes in the Plei Me area 210 miles northeast of Saigon. Viet Cong shot one helicopter down. another crash was blamed on mechanical failure. Special Forces camp near 300 Montagnard allies and 10 to 12 U.S. advisers repelled Viet Cong attacks as air strikes and flare ships covered the defense. B52 bombers later hit Viet Cong targets in Binh Dinh Province as South Vietnamese forces reported 91 enemy killed across two operations.

Plante Named U S Brewer Association Maine Representative

Jerome G. Plante 30 of Old Orchard Beach was named Maine state representative of the U S Brewers Association. William J. Rogers of Auburn was promoted to eastern division director with oversight of 13 eastern states. Rogers will be based in New York City and Plante will succeed him in Maine while remaining in Old Orchard Beach. Plante will not seek another two year term in 1967. He previously served four terms as a state representative and was clerk of the Maine House since 1965. Rogers, a former Maine Employment Security Commission field representative, has led American Legion activities and recently ran for national commander.

A 92 year old fisherman claiming ties to Hemingway arrived in exile as a fresh run of Cuban refugees reached Key West in seven boats early morning. More than 65 refugees arrived with at least 16 more expected, as coast guard boats struggled to keep pace.
