Steel Break Denied In New Settlement Talks

Washington AP reports steel industry leaders and labor giants pressed direct strike settlement talks amid signs of a fractured front. Kaiser Steel near a scaled-down union offer, a two year package with 21 cents per hour rise. Union proposed fringe benefits with no first year wage increase and a raise in year two. Negotiations began at 11 a.m. EST at the Sheraton Carlton Hotel. David J. McDonald declined comment. Continued on Page Two.

Mae West TV appearance canceled after network concerns

Mae West says CBS canceled her Person to Person telecast after a caller in the St Francis Hotel Presidential Suite informed her of the decision. The taped interview in Hollywood had been conducted by Charles Collingwood. A CBS spokesman cited parts of the show as potentially misinterpreted, while West insisted she dressed modestly in a full length black gown. James Mason and his wife substitute tonight.

Guest of honor was Mrs. Gertrude Rankin, a unit officer for over 20 years, with visitors from Kennebunkport Kennebunk Kittery Sanford and Saco auxiliaries. Officers reported on welfare and scholarship projects and the group voted to fund TB hospital efforts and a nursing scholarship.

Biddeford Saco Chest Drive Near Halfway Mark

Campaign chairman Paul vant reports the Biddeford Saco Community Chest has raised $11,660.55 to 41 percent of its $28,700 goal after a second progress report shows $5,167.80 collected since Monday. Divisions include special gifts $640 small industries $1,500 large industries $1,500 public $323 and business and professional $1,204.80. Final reports are set for October 22 as nearly 200 volunteers push for higher totals.

Hearing For B And M Set At Portland

The Boston and Maine Railroad was ordered to show cause why it should not discontinue two Maine trains and convert three others to self propelled cars. A show cause hearing is set for 9 a m Saturday in Portland City Hall, with service to continue pending the PUC decision. If approved, only the State of Maine would operate conventional service between Portland and Boston. most trains would be converted or cut.

Dorans Honored At Fete

The silver wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. William A. Doran Sr. of Biddeford was celebrated in a surprise testimonial at the Wonderbar steak house attended by about 200 locals and visitors. Clergy members and guests from Doran's pharmacy supply houses joined the event with chrysanthemums, anniversary motifs, and a cake cutting after a banquet.

Foliage At Peak Over Weekend In Maine Regions

The Maine Forestry Department says Southern and eastern Maine are at peak fall color with most hardwoods in full color. Washington and Hancock counties show peak color while Central Maine trees begin shedding leaves. Rangeley-Eustis, Moosehead Lake-Jackman, and Baxter State Park areas hold fair color. Aroostook forests have passed peak. This will be the last season’s foliage report.
