Arias Calls For Total War In Panama
Panama AP reports snipers killed two Panama National Guard soldiers in a one hour battle near the presidential palace as deposed President Arnulfo Arias urged supporters to wage total war against the military leaders who ousted him. Arias took refuge in the Canal Zone after the coup Friday night and warned of death and destruction unless the chiefs leave control. Guard spokesmen cited two guardsmen killed and others wounded, while reporters observed three guardsmen and a civilian hit. A curfew 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. was set and crowds were dispersed without difficulty. Col. Jose M. Pinilla was sworn in as provisional president and named eight civilians to his cabinet, saying civilian authority would be restored when conditions permit. The new government accused Arias of destroying representative democracy by removing a Supreme Court justice and aiming to alter the guard’s chain of command. Sources said Arias sought rapid changes, including naming his aide Lt. Col. Diaz Duque to head the presidential guard, and noted Pinilla’s retirement announcement as unexpected.
