Van Doren Subpoena Ready For Nov 2 Testimony

U S marshal preparations proceed to serve a subpoena on Charles Van Doren for a congressional probe into fixed quiz shows. Van Doren’s attorney said he will accept once delivery is arranged, with appearance before the House Legislative Oversight subcommittee set for Nov. 2. Van Doren, a Columbia English instructor, recently disappeared as NBC suspended him from a $50,000 a year consultant post after his 1956 57 Twenty One winnings.

Bakery Teamsters Set Strike Deadline in Hartford

Mediation sessions start today between the Teamsters union and New England bakery representatives. The union has set a strike deadline for tomorrow and may postpone if a worthwhile offer is made. A wind driven brush fire spread across Arroyo Seco and into foothill areas north of Los Angeles, scorching about 1200 acres and threatening La Canada and Pasadena outskirts near Caltech. More Aid For Old Should Be Three Quarters Of Income

Harvard economist Seymour E Harris told a U S Senate subcommittee that the aged 65 and over earn about half the income of others and should be raised to three quarters. He urged broad federal action including Old Age Insurance improvements, older worker housing and private pensions. He projected a minimum couple’s income of 4000 a year now and 5000 to 6000 in 10 to 20 years as the elderly share rises toward 9 percent of the population.
