Johnson vows to keep torrid pace in 1964 campaign

President Johnson, jubilant after a six day 10000 mile swing through 15 states, says he will press on to November 3. He plans two days in New Jersey Pennsylvania and New York then Ohio Texas and possibly more western states. He targets Goldwater the Klan and the Birch Society while urging expanded education and youth training as a crime countermeasure.

Humphrey to address Lewiston during New England swing

Democratic Vice Presidential candidate Sen Hubert H Humphrey will speak in Lewiston as part of a New England campaign tour. His chartered plane arrives at 4 55 pm and he heads to Kennedy Park for a 6 30 pm speech before a 6 30 pm flight to New Haven Conn. Weather is light rain but not expected to force a last minute change unless heavy downpour occurs. Executive Secretary Edward C Schlick says plan decisions will wait until the last moment.

Shingle Mill Is Razed By Fire

Clarence Hersey, 61, built a shingle mill in Littleton and watched it burn Monday night. Sparks from a gasoline engine started the blaze, just after he wired the plant for electrical power. Loss is estimated at 20000 to 30000 dollars, uninsured, with three men employed.

Governor Reed Sees Hope for Maine Textile Industry

Gov Reed expressed optimism for Maine textiles despite two mills closing at Lisbon Falls. Bates Mfg Edwards Division in Augusta has orders up after a community group lease back. He and Bachman plan to tour mills to prevent closures and retain jobs, citing imports competition as a main threat. Officials also consider keeping Worumbo mill in Lisbon Falls running through the crisis.

U S Air Force Officer Kidnapping Ends in Caracas Release

U S Air Force Lt Col Michael Smolen was released unharmed in Caracas after two of five abductors were arrested. Venezuelan police seized Arsenio Pasarin and Alberto Rodrigo Barro, both naturalized Venezuelans, as nine other suspects were detained. Smolen, from Chandler Arizona, said he was blindfolded and kept at a hideout before a late Monday reunion with his wife at the embassy.
