Goofers Swarming White Mountains
In Concord New Hampshire AP reports on the rise of goofers or do it yourself hikers who trek the White Mountains. AMC hut system welcomes thousands with eight huts from Franconia Notch to the Presidential Range offering shelter and meals. Each hut leaves a room open for emergencies as autumn storms approach. Hamilton notes near record year with 18 000 hikers and 4 000 skiers using AMC lodging. Young workers run huts and cabins, earning 18 dollars weekly while logging heavy loads up mountains. The AMC plans new huts and notes growing outdoor interest as roads improve and leisure time rises. A reservation system now governs hut access.
