Biddeford Garrison Defends Against 1675 Indian Attack
Maj William Phillips and about 50 townspeople sheltered in the Biddeford garrison during King Philip's War. Indians attacked the Saco River settlement, burned Bonython's home, and fired mills. After a prolonged siege, a cart laden with combustibles failed near the garrison, killing six attackers and wounding 15. The garrison held until relief failed, then relocated to Winter Harbor. Two weeks later the abandoned garrison burned.
