Pope Paul VI flew back to Rome after a global peace appeal. In New York he bade farewell with God bless you all as he reflected on the extraordinary hour. An estimated 3.8 million flooded the city to witness his transit and message to world leaders and governments.
Pope Paul VI concludes a global peace appeal in New York after urging nations to seek conciliation at the U N. President Johnson and U Thant hailed the visit as a stimulus toward world peace as crowds gathered at Yankee Stadium and the World’s Fair ending with prayers for harmony.
During a 14 hour swing through New York the Pope drew crowds of 3.8 million across Manhattan including St. Patrick's Cathedral and Yankee Stadium. He urged peace while meeting President Johnson in the Waldorf Astoria and spoke at Holy Family Church with interdenominational leaders.
In Natchez Mississippi police rounded up 106 marching youths after a street confrontation near a Negro church. NAACP leaders Charles Evers and Rudy Shields urged restraint as whites jeered. A loaded revolver was found on a participant, and total arrests reached 517 since last Friday with most held for parading without a permit.
