Wage Policy Meet Closes Amid Steel Strike Impasse

United Steelworkers 170 member Wage Policy Committee opened a pivotal session in Pittsburgh with President McDonald receiving a standing ovation as talks over an 83 day strike s contract offer failed to reassure early resolution. The Executive Board rejected the industry proposal in a separate session. In a murder suicide case, Fernand Cote 32 and wife Dorothy 29 were found shot on Old Limerick road Arundel. The couple, employed by Pepperell Manufacturing Biddeford, had been waiting in their driveway since yesterday afternoon as police investigated the shooting with a .22 revolver nearby.

Biddeford Saco Chest Drive Lists Four Divisions

Workers for the Biddeford Saco Community Chest drive were announced. The fifth division is to be formed soon. Maurice Roux and Roger Sherman supervise the industrial division. Arthur Peloquin and Harry Garland head the small industries division with several assistants. Business and professional solicitors include co chairs Audie and Deshaies with a long list of names. Public division solicitors operate under Harry Wooster. The drive runs October 7 to 22 with a $28,700 goal benefiting local health nursing services and Scouts.

Kauffman Case Is Continuing In Boston Harbor Mystery

Lubertus Van Drop, a Dutch crew member, testified before a Suffolk County grand jury about the death of Lynn Kauffman in Boston Harbor. He described his friendship with William Van Rie, the ship radio operator, who faces a murder warrant in Boston and is detained in New York as a fugitive.

Supreme Court Opens New Term With Civil Rights Focus

The Supreme Court reassembles to hear arguments in civil rights cases affecting the 1957 Civil Rights Act. World War I Widows Meet at Saco Gathering

The Saco unit of World War I Widows hosted guests from Kittery Portland Westbrook and Gardiner for a state department meeting at the American Legion home in Saco. Dignitaries included department president Mrs Martha Whitten Portland past presidents Mrs Edith Howard and Mrs Grace Woodbury and state secretary Mrs Louise Jenkins. A Bible was donated in memory of George Whitten. The next state meeting is planned for March 1960 in Portland with nominations elections and installation.

Officers Elected for Our Lady of Victory Circle Biddeford

Circle E elected officers at the October meeting in St. John hall Biddeford. New officers include President Mrs Anna Forcier and Vice President Mrs Albertine Fournier with Secretary Mrs Emilia Romeo and Treasurer Mrs Elizabeth Cyr. The circle will attend a Notre Dame de Lourdes church ceremony in Saco on October 11 where their banner will be blessed followed by a Rochambeau club banquet marking the 16th anniversary.

Saco Boy Struck by Taxi on Main Street

A 16 year old Saco youth Rod Bergeron of 36 Nott Street was struck by a taxi while stepping from a truck on Main Street. He suffered a severe forehead cut and a slight concussion, was taken to Saco Hospital, and required 17 stitches. Dr. David Sheehan said the youth was in good condition afterward.
