Joint installation of Boucouvalas-Dupuis AMVETS officers in Saco

In Saco on Spring Street the Boucouvalas-Dupuis AMVETS post and auxiliary held joint ceremonies for new officers. Post leaders include Commander J. Earl Clappison and first vice Richard Cote, with several other officers named. auxiliary president Evelyn Kimball and senior vice president Harriet Henderson were installed, followed by a social night with refreshments.

Nixon Leads in 22 States as Kennedy Trails in Polls

A survey of 50 states by the Associated Press suggests Richard Nixon leads in 22 states with 16 electoral votes while John F Kennedy leads in 14 states with 123 electoral votes. The findings reflect a tight, roughly even race with no clear majority.

Khrushchev Attacks Hammarskjold at United Nations

Soviet Premier Khrushchev challenged Dag Hammarskjold to resign during a UN Assembly address. He urged a three-man executive with veto powers, saying he does not trust Hammarskjold and warned of consequences if reforms are not made. The rhetoric followed threats to refuse UN decisions.

Police Called To Duty For G. E. Strike

New York and Lynn Mass report the first full effects of a nationwide General Electric strike. IUE members were told not to work except essential maintenance until a contract is reached. GE predicts over 10 000 workers may report for duty locally despite no negotiations underway. Local police in Lynn were called to duty as strike impact spreads.

Charge By Unionist is Denied

SEARSPORT AP law enforcement officers denied a union president's charges that scab workers are being escorted through union picket lines during the Searsport Limestone pipeline strike. The Independent Union of Plant Protection Employer head Frank E. Ryan said he would press the complaint with the National Labor Relations Board in Boston as policy disputes over New England Tank Industries of Cambridge, Massachusetts and the 200 mile aviation fuel pipeline operation continued.

Lachance Announces Council Candidacy in Labor Support

Ralph L. Lachance, president of Local 406 TWUA AFL-CIO at Saco-Lowell shops, announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for councilman at large. He said labor has an important part in the city’s future and backs mayoral candidate Joseph Fred Warner.

New DeMolay Officers Installed in Bradford Chapter

Bradford chapter of DeMolay held installation ceremonies at the Biddeford Masonic hall led by State Master Councillor Victor Gibion. New officers include George Harpoothan, Theodore Milne, Stuart Ruben, Bryce Milne, Albert Bunson, John Parolz, Robert Kimball, and others. Dad Robert S. Gass addressed the group as guest speaker. Governor Plans TV Session with Opponent

Governor Reed said he will send a representative to discuss a televised joint news conference with his Democratic opponent for governor. He hopes for arrangements for one or more news conferences in Augusta after receiving an invitation Saturday. Rep Frank Coffin has challenged Reed to a series of TV debates, but only one is set for Oct. 10, sponsored by the Maine League of Women Voters.

City Garage Fire Incident in Biddeford Foretold by Youths

A group of children attempted to set the Biddeford city garage on 152 Alfred Street alight early last evening. A passerby saw a fire on the roof, and Tank 1 responded at 6 15. A kerosene soaked stick burned out without damage. youths could not be identified after questioning by Fire Chief Arthur H. King.
