Journal earns record Maine Better Newspaper prizes

The Biddeford Saco Journal collected more awards than ever in the Maine Better Newspaper Contest. It won six prizes including first for front page makeup and second in general excellence among dailies, with Belfast Republican Journal taking top front page honors.

Hurricane Liza Devastates Baja California Sur Kills Hundreds

Mexican troops recovered victims from mud and buried them in mass graves after Hurricane Liza tore through Baja California Sur. Officials cited at least 630 dead, warn the toll could reach 1,000 with thousands homeless and in need of aid. An airlift and navy relief followed as President Echeverria ordered emergency aid to La Paz and other coastal towns.

Opponents Outspend Supporters on Maine Bottle Bill

In Augusta Maine opponents of a beverage container deposit law report last month they spent 90813 dollars versus 2902 by supporters. The Committee Against Forced Deposits on Cans and Bottles has spent 140257 to date and has raised 18704 in contributions. Supporters report 38956 in spending last month with 3839.56 raised. The ballot measure asks voters on November 2 to decide on deposits for beer and soda bottles and cans after January 1 1978.

Bottle bill debate raises deposits and depictions on ballot

The campaign reports 4485 dollars raised so far with 4115 dollars in contributions for both sides. If approved by voters the bottle bill would require a nickel deposit on beer and carbonated soft drinks containers with refunds on return. It bans flip-top cans and plastic six pack rings and does not require reuse.

Legion honors Kennebunk man William J. Rogers

National Commander William J. Rogers of the American Legion, a Maine native from Auburn, is honored at a testimonial banquet in Portland. Attendees include Governor Longley, Senators Muskie and Hathaway, Congressman Ben, Bishop O’Leary, and regional Legion officials. Rogers recently returned from the Far East and is feted in a three day homecoming starting Friday.
