City Council Briefed on Urban Renewal Project

The Biddeford City council received a planning briefing on an urban renewal survey by James W. Sewall Co Old Town. Maps showed land use and blighted areas while a traffic flow map highlighted Main Alfred and Elm streets. Consultant Richard Cahill outlined three steps to form an Urban Renewal authority and noted 75 percent federal funding with 25 percent municipal costs.

Northeast must act quickly on science to prosper

NASA chief James Webb told the Northeast Commerce and Industry Exposition that regional survival and prosperity hinge on rapid use of scientific and engineering advances. He urged closer ties among educational institutions business and industry to feed new knowledge into the industrial stream, warning that regions quickest to adapt will lead in the coming years.

School Bus Schedule At Thornton Changed

Mayor Dinsmore Worthing announced revisions to Thornton Academy bus schedules due to over crowding. Eligible students will receive IDs with name address and bus number to qualify for transportation. some near the academy will no longer be bused. New routes for three buses take effect tomorrow with Bus No. 10 starting at 7 a.m. from the bus barn and serving Louden Smutty Lane to Boom to Lincoln and Maple streets.

Beauticians Elect Officers At Biddeford Saco Meeting

The Biddeford Saco Hairdressers and Cosmetologists association elected officers and named a board of directors at Oak Lodge in Saco. New president is Mrs Paula Murphy with Miss Alice Lajeunesse as vice president and other officers. Committees include publicity and legislation co chairs. Installation set for December 3.

No Road Probe Denied For Maine In FBI Review

Augusta Maine August 1961 top federal highway official in Maine said the FBI has made no investigation connected with the Maine highway program. Robert Hunter district engineer for Maine said after a TV report that the FBI had found crime in road work. He checked with Albany Washingt on and the FBI had no record. FBI agent McGillicuddy Augusta said no such investigation in two years. Maine Highway Commission Chairman Stevens said he knows of no federal criminal probe. Brinkley said the FBI findings included price fixing shake downs and bribery. GAO previously reported concerns on right of way purchases in several states including Maine.
