Holiday Traffic Deaths Rise During Thanksgiving Weekend

The Associated Press reports 285 total deaths during the four day Thanksgiving period with 197 traffic fatalities 29 fire deaths and 59 in miscellaneous incidents. National Safety Council notes traffic is not as heavy as on other holidays and did not estimate fatalities for the period.

Saco Men’s Club elects officer slate

The Saco Men’s Club of the School Street Methodist Church met last night and elected officers for the coming year: president Edward Dawley, vice president Stanley Lane, secretary Thomas Vining, and treasurer Frederick Olson. Installation set for January. Rev H J Peterson and Don C Rhodes joined as members. A donation was made to the Church School for the Christmas party and a tree. Planned another spring buffet supper. Vining reported on his Thanksgiving visit with Edward Robbins of Gardiner. Continued on Page two.

Berkshire Hathaway Plans $3 Million Machinery Outlay

Berkshire Hathaway Inc. announced plans to invest about 3 million dollars in machinery and equipment upgrades for the new fiscal year as part of its drive to keep its seven textile plants competitive. The company reported 1959 60 earnings of 4.623 million and a 1969 net of 0.68 a share on 1.936 million shares.

Kidnappers Sought After Californian Ransom Case

A San Diego area kidnap case led to the arrest of Robert Gorman Ruby Marrone and Selma Marrone in Los Angeles and the search for another suspect. Anthony Alessio, 41, was released unharmed after a $200000 ransom was paid. FBI and San Diego police kept details tight to protect the victim. Alessio runs Caliente Race Track in Tijuana with his brothers.

Missing Priest And Girl Found In Phoenix Motel

Rev. Lawrence Dudink a 47 year old Wisconsin hospital chaplain and Rosalie Anne O Connell 17 were found in a two room Phoenix motel cabin after a nationwide search. Dudink is charged with kidnapping by deceit and unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. The girl a Gilbert Minnesota high school junior was in custody of juvenile authorities.

Mother Who Abandoned Tots Gets Aid

In New York Felony Court a penniless mother Eileen Weiss 29 seeks to regain her children Michael age 5 and Maria age 4 as a women's group offers to provide a home job and care. Police traced the kids after an unsigned note in the boy's pocket. the father Salvatore Andrioli 31 offered to take them but Weiss would not allow it. Magistrate Levy parole hearing set for December 6 with hope the family can be restored.

Fire destroys potato house and basement storage in Perham

A fire of undetermined origin destroyed a nearly new potato house and about 6 000 barrels of potatoes stored in its basement in Perham. Owner Harry F. James estimated the loss at 22 000 dollars. Debbie Reynolds Weds Tycoon Karl in Beverly Hills ceremony. She plans a family Christmas with her children before returning to film. The couple will honeymoon in January with a trip to Miami and the Bahamas. Karl, founder of the Thalians charity, owns 330 shoe stores and has given millions to charities. Federal libel filed over oil spill by British tanker

The federal government filed an admiralty libel in U S District Court against the British tanker British Adventure for oil pollution. The vessel carrying 201000 barrels of crude oil from Venezuela ran aground while entering Portland harbor Wednesday and later floated free, with alleged leakage continuing.

Three Hurt In Two-Car Collision In Biddeford

A two car crash at Bacon and Hills streets in Biddeford injured three people. Sister Marie Edmonds 37 of Lisbon drove the 1957 sedan. Sister Wilfrid de Jesus and Sister Marie Stella were passengers. Mrs Plante of Saco received minor injuries. Both drivers were reported uninjured. cars were heavily damaged. Captain Poirier led the investigation.

Army releases reports on air raid warnings and defense costs

Washington AP The Army published two reports from Johns Hopkins University contractors that had been accused of being withheld for political reasons. One says outdoor sirens are inadequate and urges individual home and workplace buzzer warnings. The other warns that without a 25 percent boost in economic expansion and defense spending the U S could fall behind the Soviet Union in the next decade.
