Second heart transplant in Cape Town milestone operation
Christiaan Barnard implanted a second heart at Groote Schuur Hospital in a 58 year old patient. The donor heart came from a 10 year old Cape Town girl killed in an accident. The original heart was left in place. the donor heart aids circulation. The operation marked Barnard’s 11th transplant and his first without removing the diseased heart.
