Father Dies in Oil Fumes. Two Children Hospitalized

John McCombs 73 of Lincoln Road died from asphyxiation after oil fumes leaked from a kitchen stove. Children Cathleen 14 and William 1 were admitted in serious and fair condition respectively at Webber Hospital in Biddeford. Surviving are two sons Larry and William and three daughters Cathleen Gail and Linda with services to be continued on Page Two.

Paratroopers Join Ia Drang Fight in Four-Hour Clash

South Vietnamese paratroopers engaged North Vietnamese regulars in Ia Drang Valley near the Cambodian frontier. Reports say up to 220 Communists were killed while government losses were light. B52 bombings from Guam targeted positions as U.S. forces and Vietnamese paratroops conducted independent sweeps.

Biddeford candidates enter council race

Joseph E. St. Louis and Donald R. Turgeon of Biddeford announced their bids for councilmen at large and backed Republican mayoral candidate John F. Xaphes. Turgeon, a Maine student and bank official, is married and active in local clubs. St. Louis, a long-time Biddeford resident and former Pepperell worker, is widowed with two daughters and has ties to several organizations. The Viet Nam section details multiple enemy losses and U.S. casualties during operations in the Ia Drang Valley and Mekong Delta, with Gen. Westmoreland praising the campaign’s intensity and scale.

Laflamme seeks second term as at large city councilman

Paul E. Laflamme 44 of 35 Gove Street Biddeford announces his bid for a second term as councilman at large as an independent Democrat in the December 13 city primary. A Biddeford native, he has worked in oil 18 years and served with OSS 1942 45. He belongs to AM VETS Merton Ira Staples Post, Standby Radio Communications Club and is a York County special deputy sheriff. He is married to Claire Dubuc with two daughters and attends St. Andre's Church.

Ia Drang Bloodiest Viet Nam Battle In Five Days

Vietnamese and American forces clashed in Ia Drang Valley near Cambodia as regular North Vietnamese divisions pushed into the area. U S troops used helicopters artillery planes rockets napalm and B52s to inflict heavy losses. About 350 enemy bodies counted as U S forces began withdrawing after five days of fierce fighting.
