Vatican Council approves interim birth control statement

The Vatican Ecumenical Council approved an interim statement on birth control that experts say could eventually support a moral acceptance of contraceptives. It also defeated a nuclear stockpiling declaration and finished three days of voting on the family and marriage chapter with 1596 voting yes and 72 against plus 484 with reservations. the details of the reservations remain unclear.

Gordon Flood of 11 Stuart Street, native of Kennebunk and Boothbay Harbor educated, seeks election as alderman in Saco Ward 7. Republican and World War II veteran paratrooper, he's married to Lydia Waters of Saco with two daughters Retta in the Women’s Army Corps at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and Marcia a Burns School student.

Dairy Farmer Free On Bail In Bank Robbery Case

East Livermore dairy farmer Gerald C. Castonguay is free on 7500 bail for a February Superior Court arraignment on charges from the April 15 robbery of the Depositors Trust Co. branch in Wilton. He was returned to Maine after six months of a three-year federal sentence in a Connecticut penitentiary for the holdup. Castonguay, 23, had been indicted in October on charges of stealing 63827 and assaulting a teller.

Webber Hospital Association elects new president and board

Adelbert M. Jakeman Sr. was chosen president at the Webber Hospital Association annual meeting held at the hospital nurses home. Officers include Stuart V. Flavin vice president M Abbott Pendergast secretary and Archie B. Maxwell treasurer. The board reelected for four years features Jakeman Ward Johnson Roy MacNaughton and others. The report outlined expansion progress with a new 40 bed patient floor an out patient department a business office and X ray room completed, a second stage underway with centralized food service half done, and plans for a new laboratory in the final stage. Retiring President Rogers presided and thanked staff and volunteers.

Woman Seeks Biddeford Council At Large Seat

Theresa N. Connolly of Wentworth Street announces candidacy for Biddeford council at large as an independent Democrat in the December 13 primary. Connolly, born in Biddeford and educated locally, has been chief clerk for the assessors office and formerly worked as a reporter for the Biddeford Daily Journal and Portland Press Herald. She has also held roles with the Washington Times-Herald and Miami Herald and worked in the Navy Department. She serves on several Democratic committees and is the widow of James B. Connolly.
